Lutz, Florida - UPDATE: Pasco County deputies say within 45 minutes of surveillance video airing on the news Thursday, eight calls came in to detectives. One of them, Daniel Quinnell's mother. Detectives say she realized the danger to others and to himself and called deputies.

Quinnell is no stranger to law enforcement. Deputies have had contact with him 51 times and he has multiple arrests. But detectives say this time it was different because it was racially motivated.

He will make his first appearance in court Friday afternoon. Detectives will request his charge be increased to a hate crime.

Quinnell's parents at one point convinced him to turn himself in overnight, but he changed his mind. That's when deputies went to the Comfort Inn off I-75 and State Road 54 to arrest him. Detectives say when he first saw deputies, he put his hands behind his back and said he was the guy they were looking for.

You may wonder why he had a pellet gun. Deputies say he told them, since he was a convicted felon, he can't have a gun so he always carries the pellet gun.

As for the victim, he is recovering. He was shot in the face and neck. He still has two pellets lodged in his face and neck, he'll have them removed surgically next week.

Lutz, Florida - UPDATE: Surveillance video leads to an arrest in Wednesday's early morning shooting at a Walmart in Lutz.

Pasco County deputies say they got several tips after they released the surveillance video of the shooting. One tip, they say, told them the possible shooter was staying at a hotel in the area of State Road 54 and I-75.

That's where detectives arrested 25-year-old Daniel Quinnell. He's in currently being held at the Land O' Lakes Jail on aggravated battery charges.

Pasco County detectives are also investigating this as a possible hate crime after the victim told police the shooter asked him if he was of Middle Eastern descent or was a Muslim before opening fire with a pellet gun.

The police report also said the shooter shouted racial slurs, and was apparently upset the darker-skinned man was walking along with a white woman.

The victim was taken to the hospital with wounds to his head and neck. He's out of the hospital, but still has two pellets lodged in his face and neck. He will have those surgically removed next week.
