LAKELAND, Florida -- We are learning more about a Lakeland teen who deputies said was hit and killed by an alleged drunk driver.

A classmate who didn't want to be identified said 16-year-old Blake Dowdy went to Central Florida Aerospace Academy and was active in the ROTC there. 10 News was told Dowdy also wanted to be a Marine.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, 29-year-old Christopher Koenig was drinking and driving when he hit the teen and took off from the scene.

Investigators said Koenig and a passenger were in his truck and had just left a bar around 1:40 Sunday morning. He was going eastbound along CR 540-A near Hallam Preserve Boulevard. Dowdy and a friend were walking westbound on the shoulder of that road. According to detectives, Koenig slammed his truck into Dowdy, throwing him 87 feet into a drainage ditch.

Authorities said Koenig dropped off his passenger, drove to his home along Byrds Crossing Drive, then called 911 about 40 minutes after the crash.

"I was on my way home from the bar and he was in the middle of the road and I ran right into him," said Koenig in a 911 recording.

Koenig's roommate described his friend as a "really good guy" and also added, "Everybody makes stupid mistakes."

Koenig is being charged with DUI Causing Death and Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death.
