ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Bay area fire rescue officials continue to warn people to be careful if they still plan on setting off fireworks over the weekend. They say people often underestimate just how much power they can pack.
"I think a lot of people don't really know the magnitude or the ramifications that can come into an accidental injury," says Cpt. Todd Livingston with St. Petersburg Fire Rescue.
In Pasco County, authorities are still searching for two young men who placed lit fireworks at the doorstep of two Land O' Lakes homes. Cameras captured the young men at one of the houses lighting the fireworks, ringing the doorbell, and driving away.
It caused quite a bit of damage to one of the homes' doors and also the attic. Luckily, no one was hurt in the prank. But they very easily could have been.
"You could have some serious potential injuries or loss of life just doing something stupid like that," says Cpt. Livingston.
Authorities say the crime is considered first degree arson.
If you still do plan on setting off fireworks, here are some quick reminders:
- Make sure you keep your distance after they're lit
- Always supervise children
- Make sure you keep a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it
