BAGHDAD (AP) — The U.S. military says a senior leader of al-Qaida in Iraq has been killed in Mosul.
A spokesman in Baghdad today says Abu Yasir al-Saudi was killed Wednesday in a precision strike with a guided missile fired from a helicopter. It demolished his car, killing him and another man from Saudi Arabia.
Al-Saudi was wanted in numerous attacks on U.S. and Iraqi forces, including a roadside bombing and ambush in January that killed five American soldiers.
Mosul has become an insurgent hotbed, with daily battles between militants and U.S. forces. Wednesday's strike brings the number of al-Qaida operatives killed or captured there since the start of the year to 142.
