UNITED NATIONS (AP) — America's UN ambassador isn't sold on the idea of sending an international force to Lebanon.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan made the suggestion, saying it could help end the crisis there. Annan warned any new force would have to be far stronger than the U-N peacekeepers who for decades have been in Lebanon without making much impact.
But US Ambassador John Bolton says the Security Council shouldn't rush into it. Bolton prefers to wait until there's some idea what the likely military or political resolution might be. And he says any new sort of force brings with it a wide range of questions, like whether it should have the power to disarm the guerrillas.
