COPENHAGEN (AP) -- A Danish cartoonist whose depiction of the Prophet Muhammad sparked widespread outrage in the Muslim world says things got hairy when an ax-wielding attacker tried to barge into his home.

Kurt Westergaard tells his employer the Jyllands-Posten daily the assailant shouted "revenge" and blood" as he tried to enter the bathroom where Westergaard had sought shelter with his 5-year-old granddaughter.

He says his grandchild did fine, but that it was "really close."

The head of Denmark's intelligence agency says a Somali man with ties to al-Qaida carried out the attack Friday night. Westergaard pressed an alarm and retreated to a specially made safe room and emerged unharmed. The attacker was shot by police in the knee and hand. Despite the injuries, the 28-year-old's life isn't in danger.

Authorities say the attack is "terror related" and that the man is suspected of having a part in terror related activities in east Africa.
