Reno, Nevada (RGJ) -- An elderly man entered Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center on Sunday morning and shot his wife in the chest, the Carson City Sheriff's Office reported.

William Dresser, 88, entered the hospital at about 11:20 a.m. and proceeded to the third floor, where he shot his wife before state correction officers, who were on the same floor, subdued him, according to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. He was placed under citizen's arrest until deputies arrived shortly after.

"They took action to prevent this incident from escalating," Furlong said. "So it was very quickly brought under control."

The victim, whose name was not released, was flown to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, said Cheri Glockner, spokeswoman for the Carson Medical Center. Authorities said in a news release Sunday night that the victim's injuries are life-threatening.

Hospital security removed a .22 caliber handgun from Dresser and held him down until authorities arrived, said Mike Hendi, ESI Security Services chief executive officer. The firm does work for Carson Tahoe. It is procedure to make sure the incident is isolated and staff and patients elsewhere are safe, Hendi said.

"This hospital is very unique because it has a lot of emphasis on safety and security," he said. "It's above the standards for a hospital."

Carson Tahoe was placed on lockdown for two hours following the shooting. It reopened at 1:45 p.m., Furlong said Sunday afternoon, and normal business operations will resume today.

"At that time, we didn't believe any other patients or staffs were in jeopardy," he said.

Furlong said in the news release that Dresser was booked at the Carson City jail on the charge of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, with an elderly enhancement. Bail was set at $225,000. Dresser was on suicide watch on Sunday, the release said.

Sunday's shooting is the second to take place on the campus of an area hospital in recent weeks.

On Dec. 17, Alan Oliver Frazier opened fire at the Renown Regional Medical Center campus in Reno.

Frazier, 51, killed one person and wounded two more before turning the gun on himself in the Urology Nevada offices on the third floor of the Center for Advanced Medicine.
