Former first lady Barbara Bush in Aug. 22, 2013.
Barbara Bush doesn't believe presidential candidates should come only from political dynasties.
In an interview airing Monday on C-SPAN, the former first lady - wife of the 41st president and mother to the 43rd president - opened up about why she doesn't want her son, Jeb, to run for the White House.
"If we can't find more than two or three families to run for office, that's silly, because there are great governors and great eligible people to run," Bush says. "And I think that the Kennedys, Clintons, Bushes - there are just more families than that. And I'm not arrogant enough to think that we alone are raising" presidential candidates.
Bush raised eyebrows last year when she told NBC News that "we've had enough Bushes" in the White House. Jeb, a former two-term Florida governor, laughed off his mother's remark and says he'll decide this year whether he'll run in 2016.
Ever the proud mother, Barbara Bush insisted her son is the "best qualified person" to run next time around. But just like any parent, she's worried about the downside to a campaign.
"I think he'll get all my enemies, all his brother's," Bush said.
The Bush interview, part of C-SPAN's ongoing "First Ladies" series, will air Jan. 20 at 9 p.m. ET. Her segment was taped in October, well before she was hospitalized with a bout of pneumonia.
