PARIS - A French prosecutor said Thursday that a 4-year-old girl was been found alive among three dead bodies in a British-registered car in the French Alps after hiding under them for eight hours.
Annecy Prosecutor Eric Maillaud said earlier Thursday that the girl "had stayed under the bodies, lying down" before police found her. She was reportedly hidden under the leg of a female victim in the car.
In remarks to journalists at the site, he said the girl spoke English but could not describe what had happened.
Prosecutor Eric Mallaird told reporters at the scene that the girl was found "completely in shock," but that she was appeared to be in good health and had been taken to a local hospital for medical checks."
The three adults were found killed in the BMW, and a French cyclist, believed to have been a local man, was found shot to death nearby on a forest road Wednesday.
Another girl was hospitalized with bullet wounds. She was found outside the vehicle, but nearby. Sky News reported from the scene that she had suffered a fractured skull, but was expected to recover.
The identities of the victims were not released, but British media widely reported they were believe to be of the same British family. Campers at a nearby campsite told Sky News a family who had parked their caravan earlier at the site had not been seen since before the murder scene was discovered.
There were no known suspects and no motive for the crime had been discussed publicly by police.
Police blocked off the area, situated in a scenic part of France popular with tourists and campers, and were combing the forest for possible perpetrators.
