The American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana is threatening to sue a charter high school over a rule that makes pregnant students stay at home.
The rule at Delhi Charter School also can make any girl suspected of being pregnant take a pregnancy test. If she refuses, she can be kept out of school.
State ACLU executive director Marjorie R. Esman said Tuesday that the rule violates federal laws against sexual discrimination. As far as she knows, it's unique.
Esman says that an attorney for the school is reviewing the rule and appears to be taking the ACLU's arguments seriously.
Officials at the school in northeastern Louisiana did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Delhi is about 160 miles north of Baton Rouge.
