NEW YORK (AP) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he wonders why police officers across the country don't threaten to strike until tougher gun controls are passed.

Bloomberg made the comment Monday night on CNN.

The mayor said he doesn't understand why officers "don't stand up collectively and say we're going to go on strike."

He clarified Tuesday that he didn't mean it literally. He says New York law prevents police strikes.

But he said officers ought to be outraged by the lack of gun control because they willingly go into dangerous situations.

It was Bloomberg's latest push for gun control since the Colorado massacre.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Tuesday he thought it was simply a statement of frustration by the mayor reacting to the country's inadequate gun control.
