TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A man was sentenced to 40 years in prison today for conspiring with another man to drug, torture and rape a young man they picked up at a Tampa club.
Scott Schweickert was convicted of distributing the drug GHB to a victim to commit a crime of violence. He was acquitted on a drug distribution charge that involved a second man.
Prosecutors said Schweickert and Steven Lorenzo drugged, tortured and raped men they lured home from bars in 2003. Two of them died.
Lorenzo was convicted of the same federal charges in November 2005 and sentenced to 200 years in prison.
Schweickert's attorney said his client engaged in role-playing sexual fantasies and was shocked when Lorenzo killed the two men.
In a taped interview with investigators played in court, Schweickert admitted helping Lorenzo cut off the limbs of one of the victims, put the parts in trash bags and dump them in trash bins across the city.
