St. Petersburg, Florida -- There was a time when Ted Nugent was known only as the "Motor City Madman," the Detroit rocker who sang the hit song Cat Scratch Fever.
These days, Nugent is known as a staunch conservative, a gun rights activist and a vocal opponent of President Barack Obama. In fact, Nugent made headlines recently when he called the president a "subhuman mongrel." It's a phrase rooted in Nazi and anti-Semitic propaganda and the writings of white supremacists.
Nugent has since apologized for the statement and on CNN, he said the word "mongrel" comes from his experience in law enforcement.
Here is what he said:
"I've been a cop in Lake County, Michigan since 1982 or thereabouts. I conduct federal raids with the DEA and the ATF and the U.S. Marshals and the FBI and the Texas Rangers."
PunditFact looked at his work with law enforcement and discovered that Nugent is not the kind of cop people might expect.
"His law enforcement credentials are very thin," said Katie Sanders of PolitiFact. "He's a reservist for a sheriff's office in Michigan, but he has no authority or any kind of ability to arrest people. We talked to the sheriff in that county and he said that he's been helpful in raising some money for some charitable causes, but he hasn't been involved in any raids."
As for the raids Nugent said he has been part of, PunditFact found a slight bit of truth to it... very slight.
"We did find, in 2005, that he went on a ride along with the U.S. Marshals in Texas," said Sanders. "But he was at a distance; he wasn't going into homes and busting up corruption and drug practices or whatever."
The ride along was actually for a television show.
Because Nugent is not a police officer in any conventional way and none of the agencies he mentioned say he's been on any raids, PunditFact gives him its worst grade: PANTS ON FIRE.
Nugent did say he had a very real training experience at an FBI training facility. Read more about that and this fact check, on PunditFact.
