Tampa, Florida -- A Tampa police officer was taken to the hospital with a possible broken hand on Sunday after an accident on the Suncoast Parkway two miles north of State Road 54.
The officer was reportedly returning home in a marked police car when another car that was pulled over on the shoulder of an off ramp re-entered the lane.
The officer struck the other car in the rear bumper. Tampa police believe the vehicle's driver was trying to re-enter the main route of travel to avoid the Sunpass toll.
The officer was taken to Tampa General Hospital. The occupants of the other car were taken to a Pasco County hospital. Authorities say one suffered a possible broken hip, the other was reportedly disoriented with minor injuries.
Both vehicles were totaled.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the officer was not at fault.
