Pinellas County, Florida -- Deputies are investigating a vehicle and pedestrian crash that killed a Safety Harbor man.

Around 7:30 on Friday evening 68-year-old Gilbert Greene and his wife Brenda were leaving Sungroves Ice Cream Shop and crossing SR 580. As they were crossing Gilbert was struck by a Ford Ranger driven by Mark Cavanaugh.

Gilbert was transported to the hospital for treatment where he later died from his injuries. Deputies say neither speed nor impairment were factors in the crash.

Reportedly, Gilbert was carrying his dog, Rudi, in his arms as they crossed the road and after he was struck Rudi ran away. Rudi, a miniature Daschund, was found walking the area of McMullen Booth Road still dragging its red leash.

Deputies secured the dog and returned it to Brenda Greene
