U.S. Rep. Bill Young (R FL-13)

St. Petersburg, Florida -- U.S. Representative C.W. Bill Young is in the hospital and "gravely ill," according to a statement from the Congressman's family.

The full statement reads as follows:

"U.S. Rep. C. W. Bill Young's condition turned for the worse over night and he is gravely ill. His doctors say his prognosis is guarded."

The statement was released shortly after several erroneous tweets appeared saying Young had died.

Young has been at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland due to back problems stemming from a 1970 small-plane crash. He was not present in the House of Representatives Wednesday night when Congress voted to end the government shutdown and extend the debt ceiling.

The news comes just a week after Young announced he would not run for re-election next year.

At Young's district office in Seminole on Thursday afternoon, calls poured in from people saying they were keeping the Congressman in their thoughts and prayers.

Young was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1971, and represents Florida's 13th district, which covers much of Pinellas County. He's one of Florida's most influential and longest-serving members of Congress.

The Congressman is a longtime member of the House Appropriations Committee, where he focused on military spending. Young and his wife, Beverly, frequently visited ailing service members at hospitals in the Washington area.

In recent years, Young has become increasingly frail and often relies on a wheelchair.
