New Orleans, Louisiana — A Florida man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and robbery in the case of a man beaten and drowned in a New Orleans hot tub.
27-year-old Kriss Lane of Ruskin, Florida, will avoid a capital murder trial.
He was charged in the July 2003 death of Shawn Johnson of Atlanta and has accepted a 45-year prison term.
Johnson was a lighting designer who had come to New Orleans to work behind the scenes at a convention.
He apparently invited Lane and his friends back to his hotel for a party.
Police say Lane clubbed Johnson over the head with a champagne bottle and held his head under water until he stopped moving.
The coroner's office says that Johnson died from drowning after head trauma.
