  • Sanford, FL -- The mothers of both George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin took the stand Friday, with each saying they believe it's their son screaming for help in the background of a 911 call made the night Martin was killed.

Zimmerman is charged with second degree murder in Martin's death.

Sybrina Fulton testified that she believes it's "Trayvon Benjamin Martin" while Gladys Zimmerman told the jury of six women that she believes it's George Zimmerman calling out. Asked if she was certain, Gladys Zimmerman replied, "Because he's my son.

Earlier in the day, the associate medical examiner who performed the autopsy on the 17-year-old Martin took the stand. Dr. Shiping Bao testified Martin was alive for as long as 10 minutes after being shot and was in pain with the bullet piercing his heart.

But Bao also contradicted prosecutor's contention made in opening statements that Martin died from a contact shot. Bao says he believes the muzzle of the gun was .4-inches to 4-feet away from Martin when Zimmerman fired.

Bao also left open the door that injuries to one of Martin's hands could have happened while beating up Zimmerman.

"It could have occurred before he died, could of happened right after shooting on the way down to the ground, could have happened during the physical struggle," Bao said.

Before the state rested, Judge Debra Nelson also denied a motion for an acquittal.

The trail will resume at 9 a.m. Monday morning.
