Polk County, Florida-- The Polk County Clerk of the Circuit Court Stacy Butterfield wants to warn the community of scams taking place throughout the county.
"Someone unlawfully impersonating a clerk's office employee is calling local residents and threatening them with arrest," Butterfield announced in a release to the media.
Apparently not one, but two citizens recently received a voice mail saying fraud cases had been filed against them, and an officer would be there soon to serve an arrest warrant. In both messages, the caller claimed to be from the Polk County Clerk of Courts Office.
And when the victims tried to call the "(888)" area coded number left in the message, they reached a recording that said the person they were calling was busy with someone else.
"The Clerk's Office does not contact individuals to advise a case has been filed against them or a warrant is being issued, [and] we do not have an 888 area code." Butterfiled clarified in the release. "If you receive such a call, do not provide any personal information."
