There are several events scheduled this Monday to honor our fallen heroes on Memorial Day:

Memorial Day Ceremony - Pinellas Park:

The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (VAHCS) will commemorate Memorial Day with a ceremony on Monday, May 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bay Pines National Cemetery.

It's the only National Cemetery in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties and the largest observance of Memorial Day with over 3,000 people expected. Veterans, their families and friends, and the general public are invited to attend.

To mark the occasion, the nearly 32,000 graves at the cemetery will be marked with U.S. flags to honor the men and women who served the nation.

The event will take place outdoors.

Directions: I-275 to Exit 25 (38th Avenue North). West on 38th Avenue North about five miles to Tyrone Boulevard. Turn right onto Tyrone Boulevard and proceed approximately 2.5 miles. Turn left at 95th (this is the east entrance to the VA property). Follow that road about .25 miles and the cemetery will be on the left.

Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonies - Sarasota:

The Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee and the Venice Area Veterans Council, in coordination with Sarasota County's Veterans Benefits Unit, have announced plans for Memorial Day parades and ceremonies in Sarasota and Venice.

The Sarasota parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27, at Main Street and Osprey Avenue. The route will be west along Main Street to Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park on Gulfstream Avenue.

The ceremony at Hamel Park in Sarasota will begin immediately after the parade. John Rosentrater, Director of Sarasota National Cemetery, will be the guest speaker.

Memorial Day Ceremony - Venice:

In Venice a ceremony will be hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8118. It will start at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27, at Patriots Park at the northern junction of Business 41 and Bypass 41.

The guest speaker will be Randy Smith, who, as a 17-year-old Marine, pulled down the flag at the American Embassy in Saigon on April 29, 1975. He left on one of the last helicopters departing from Vietnam.

Attendees to the events should bring their own chairs. Water will be provided.

Memorial Day Ceremony - Largo:

Monday night the City of Largo plans to honor those who have lost their lives while fighting for our country. The ceremony will be held Monday, May 27 at 7 p.m. at Largo Central Park's Military Court of Honor (101 Central Park Dr. in Largo).

This ceremonial event will include music, a color guard and a wreath presentation in remembrance of our fallen soldiers. The ceremony will also feature, keynote speaker, Brigadier General Lyman L. "Lewie" Edwards Jr., United States Air Force.
