Tampa, Florida -- A man has been charged for the death of a 2-year-old boy, almost exactly one year after the crime allegedly occurred.
Tampa Police say on May 25, 2012, Candace Mitchell came home to discover her son, Christian Love, was almost lifeless and breathing shallow. The child had been left alone with her ex-boyfriend, Javaurian Saffold. Saffold reportedly told her the boy fell and struck his head on the tile floor.
Police say Mitchell waited nearly five hours before taking her son to the hospital. As a result, she was arrested during the initial investigation for aggravated child abuse.
Christian died at Tampa General Hospital on May 30 from severe brain trauma. The medical examiner determined that the injury was not consistent with a fall.
Saffold was arrested in Escambia County and charged with first degree murder and aggravated child abuse. Police say he'll be extradited to the Hillsborough County jail in the near future.
Saffold has a violent history. He was already serving probation for committing aggravated child abuse on an infant in 2008. A few months before that he was arrested for battery on a pregnant female and in 2010 he was also arrested for domestic violence.
