New Port Richey, Florida -- A Pasco County man is facing felony animal cruelty charges for allegedly killing a litter of pit bull puppies and burying them in the back yard.

According to his arrest report, 21-year-old David Thompson was at his friend Martin Smith's house helping him move on Friday when they discussed what to do with four 8-week-old pit bull puppies that were in the back yard.

Smith's father, Timothy Smith, allegedly suggested to them that they "take them into the woods and beat their heads in."

Martin Smith was hesitant to do so, but Thompson grabbed a shovel and reportedly said, "I'll take care of it." He then went into the backyard by himself, where he allegedly beat the puppies over the head with the shovel. Investigators say he returned a few minutes later and declared, "There. It's done."

The three men then allegedly buried the dead puppies and covered the burial ground with a dog crate.

Deputies were alerted to the incident, and after interviewing the men and several neighbors -- as well as uncovering the grave -- Thompson was arrested and taken to Land O' Lakes jail on $5,000 bond.  Martin and Timothy Smith were not arrested.
