ST. PETERSBURG, Florida - Police have identified the teenager killed in a vehicle crash Friday night.
Alexia Douglas, a student at Northeast High School, died just before 7 p.m. at the bridge leading out of Shore Acres on 40th Avenue Northeast.
The 16-year-old was a passenger in a 2008 Ford Escape. She died on impact when the vehicle drove up on the concrete barricade that protects the sidewalk of the bridge and went airborne.
"It bothered me all night. That's all I thought about today. I have granddaughters that are that age," said Tom Betis, who lives across the street from the crash.
The car hit metal guard rails that line the wall of the bridge, piercing the passenger side windshield and killing Douglas on impact.
The driver, Christina Shiver, 16, told investigators she became distracted before the crash, although it's not clear yet what caused her to lose focus. She was taken to All Children's Hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and eventually released.
