Tampa, Florida -- A woman was killed after she was thrown from her car in a crash on Adamo Drive and US 301, but her 6-month-old daughter was properly secured in her seat and only suffered minor injuries.

It happened around 6:30 Monday morning. Other drivers in the area told the Florida Highway Patrol that the woman seemed to be in a hurry, and was speeding. Troopers say she caught the edge of the inside median of Adamo Drive going around a curve, and overcorrected.

When she did, she shot across two lanes of traffic and slammed into a ditch on the outside edge of the road in front of the Ferman Chevrolet car dealership.

That grassy drainage area is marked with huge dark divots where the red Chevy Monte Carlo rolled and spun along the ditch, flinging up dirt before it came to a stop.

The driver was not wearing her seat belt, troopers said. As the car tumbled, she was thrown out of the car. The spiraling car crushed her, and she died at the scene.

Rescuers found the woman's 6-month-old daughter still properly strapped into her carseat in the center of the car's back seat.

Despite the chaos of the crash, the baby had only minor injuries and is expected to be fine, troopers said. The young girl is recovering at Tampa General Hospital.

We don't yet know the names of the people involved; FHP says it intends to release that information once their family members have new notified.
