Youngstown, OH (Sports Network) - A pair of free throws by Billy Baron in the
waning moments of overtime were just what Canisius needed as the Golden
Griffins picked up a thrilling 84-82 win over the Youngstown State Penguins
in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at the Beeghly
Baron scored a game-high 30 points for Canisius (20-13), shooting 10-of-19
from the floor and 8-of-9 at the free-throw line, while adding six rebounds,
five assists and three steals. Alshwan Hymes tacked on 19 points off the bench
for the visitors.
The Penguins (18-16) were paced by Blake Allen who dropped in 27 points,
hitting 7-of-12 shots behind the 3-point line. Kendrick Perry responded with
20 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Kamren Belin and Damian
Eargle with 14 points and 11 boards each.
YSU ran out to a 19-7 lead just over six minutes into the first half,
eventually leading by a score of 45-28 at the break after shooting an
impressive 9-of-16 behind the 3-point line. Canisius converted a disappointing
28.6 percent from the field through the first 20 minutes of action.
In the second half the hosts made a total of only eight field goals, opening
the door for the Griffs to fight their way back, but the visitors needed a 3-
pointer by Baron with just under one minute remaining in regulation to knot
the score and send the meeting to overtime knotted at 73-73.
Seconds into the extra session the Penguins jumped out to a three-point
advantage, but refusing to back down, Canisius hung around until Baron could
win the game at the charity stripe.
The Golden Griffs shot just 37.3 percent from the field on the evening, but
made up for it by outscoring the Penguins at the free-throw line, 18-9, and
turning the ball over a mere six times.
Canisius now heads to the quarterfinals of this tournament with an opponent
and date to be determined.
