ST. PETERSBURG, Florida -- No matter where you go in Tampa Bay, people are buying Powerball tickets.
At 4th Street Food and Gas, the Powerball machine is red hot, spitting out tickets by the hundreds. And everyone thinks they have the winning ticket.
"I have the winning 500 million dollar ticket," says Phoebe Spencer.
Spencer is buying her tickets tonight, but her plan for the cash if she wins is one of charity, not greed.
"I am blessed. I have a home and a car, and I'd like to try and help other people who need it," said Spencer.
Her daughter, on the other hand, has other ideas.
"Are you gonna buy something for your mom? No!"
Your odds of winning are astronomical, but there are ways you can better your chances. Number one: there's strength in numbers. Your odds of winning are better if you pool your money and play with a group.
Number two: make sure your numbers are mixed up. Use high and low numbers and try not to have consecutive numbers.
Number three: Picking your own numbers doesn't increase your odds of winning. Overwhelmingly, players don't pick their numbers. Computers do, and those numbers do better.
Lennix Adams let the computers pick his numbers, and he says winning would help his struggling small business.
"I just opened a clothing boutique with my wife. If I won, I'd pay off the store, move to New York, finish my college education, and keep opening up stores," said Adams.
