Tampa, FL -- He ran the risk of having a stroke, but thanks to a new procedure, Arturo Diaz has a new lease on life.

Diaz was the first patient at Florida Hospital's Pepin Heart Institute to undergo the LARIAT, a new catheter-based procedure that uses sutures to tie off the left atrial appendage. That area is a major source of blood clots which can lead to stroke but the LARIAT lassos the appendage preventing clots.

This LARIAT procedure had only been done in Texas, New York and Miami until now. Florida Hospital is the first in Tampa Bay Region to perform and West and Central Florida.
