Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Mark Reynolds hit a pair of homers and Miguel Gonzalez tossed seven scoreless innings, as the Baltimore Orioles handled the New York Yankees, 6-1, in the opener of a key three-game series. J.J. Hardy hit a solo homer for the Orioles, who now trail New York by just two games in the AL East. Nick Markakis and Chris Davis added an RBI apiece. Gonzalez (6-3) gave up four hits while striking out nine and walking one for Baltimore, which has won six of seven. Hiroki Kuroda (12-10) allowed four runs on eight hits over 8 1/3 innings for the Yankees. The Japanese right-hander struck out four and did not issue a walk.

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Adrian Beltre went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored as the Texas Rangers took a 5-3 win over the Cleveland Indians in the opener of a three-game set. Michael Young drove in two while David Murphy had two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Rangers, who have won three of their last four. Ryan Dempster (4-1) got the win in the start as he gave up just one unearned run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in six innings. Casey Kotchman clubbed a two-run home run for the Indians, who lost 24 games in a month for the first time since July 1914. Ubaldo Jimenez (9-14) gave up four runs on eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Delmon Young ripped a tie-breaking, three-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Detroit Tigers downed the Chicago White Sox, 7-4, in the opener of a three-game set Friday at Comerica Park. Miguel Cabrera added three hits, including a two-run home run and scored twice for the Tigers, who now trail the White Sox by just two games in the AL Central and have beaten them in five straight matchups. Octavio Dotel (5-2) earned the victory after allowing just one hit over 1 2/3 innings of relief. Jose Valverde tossed a scoreless ninth to nail down his 27th save of the season. Jake Peavy (9-10) was charged for six runs on nine hits and four walks over six-plus frames to take his third straight losing decision. A.J. Pierzynski clubbed a solo homer and Paul Konerko plated a pair in the setback, Chicago's fourth in its last five games.

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Brandon Morrow hurled 6 2/3 effective innings on Friday and the Toronto Blue Jays edged the Tampa Bay Rays, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game series at Rogers Centre. Morrow (8-5) gave up one run on eight hits and a walk with five strikeouts to put an end to a personal two- game losing streak. Steve Delabar worked 1 1/3 perfect innings in relief and Casey Janssen was bailed out of trouble in the ninth inning to earn his 19th save of the season. Edwin Encarnacion hit a solo home run, while Moises Sierra smoked a solo home run and helped out defensively by throwing out Elliot Johnson at the plate for the final out of the game. Desmond Jennings accounted for the lone run with a home run and Jeremy Hellickson (8-10) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits over six innings for the Rays, who have lost six of their last seven.

Minnesota at Kansas City, postponed

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Friday night's series-opener between the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals has been postponed due to rain. Kansas City was coming off a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers and Will Smith was to take the ball on the mound, while rookie righty Cole De Vries was set to start for the Twins. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday with game one set to get underway at 4:10 p.m. (et).
