TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll is spending a week in the south Caribbean on a trade mission.

Carroll on Saturday is leading a delegation of 27 Florida companies to Trinidad and Tobago, an island republic off the coast of Venezuela. Trinidad is the state's largest trading partner in the English-speaking Caribbean.

Carroll was born in Trinidad and immigrated to the United States as a young child and became a naturalized citizen.

Her arrival comes shortly before the country celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence from Great Britain. She is scheduled to give speeches on American democracy and the role states have in U.S. elections.

An estimated 40,000 people from Trinidad and Tobago live in Florida according to U.S. Census estimates. Last year approximately 75,000 people from the nation visited Florida.
