ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A woman is dead after St. Petersburg police say she was struck by a car that may have been racing another vehicle.
Police say a 1995 Honda Civic driven by 27-year-old Matthew Cook was eastbound on 1st Ave. South was possibly racing an unidentified white car. Kris Jones, 40, was riding her bicycle eastbound in the bike lane. Cook, for an unknown reason, attempted to pass a SUV by moving into the bike lane, hitting Jones and throwing her into the windshield and roof of the Honda.
Police say the Honda then continued sliding into the rear of a Dodge Durango parked on 1st Ave. and pushed it off the road into a tree.
Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. Cook was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in serious condition. His 3-year-old daughter, who was in the car with him, was taken to All Children's Hospital where she was treated and released.
The investigation is ongoing.
