PLANT CITY, Florida -- Two police officers have saved the life of a man who tried to jump from an I-4 overpass in Plant City on Monday.
Police say a shirtless 29-year-old man was sitting on the guard barrier at I-4 and Fritzke Road with his legs hanging over the side as if, police say, he was ready to launch himself onto the interstate. Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Miller approached the man and engaged him in conversation. The man told Miller, "I want to kill myself" and "I'm gonna jump off the bridge."
While asking to see the man's ID, Miller rushed him and grabbed him, pulling him off the guard barrier and onto the shoulder of Fritzke Road.
A nearby Hillsborough County deputy assisted Miller in getting the man handcuffed, and he was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
The man has since been Baker Acted. His name is not being released.
