St. Petersburg, Florida -- Gas prices have climbed by about a quarter per gallon in just a week. What's behind the spike, and what happens next?

It's awkward, because at least part of us should be pleased about this particular rise in gas prices. That's because the spike is the result of freedom and liberty.

Rebels in Lybia are fighting in the streets to overthrow their dictator, Col. Moammar Gadhafi. Change has already come in Egypt and Tunisia. Protestors for democracy are also taking action in other big-time oil countries.

But that instability leads to a lot of questions about oil supplies on the world's markets -- a situation that drives prices up, according to AAA.

Compare average gas prices per gallon:

National average
$3.35 today
$3.16 a week ago

Tampa Bay average
$3.33 today
$3.09 a week ago

AAA provides these numbers and says it's having a hard time predicting them into the future. According to the auto club, what's next hinges on what happens in perhaps the most unpredictable part of the planet: the Middle East and its Arab neighbors.
