TAMPA, Florida - Although little new ground was broken at a Wednesday evening debate, five candidates running to be Tampa's next mayor provided insight as to how they'll approach the campaign's final month.

Frontrunner Dick Greco, seeking a fifth term in office, spent much of his time speaking of his past successes such as building the police department, negotiating the Community Investment Tax, and growing the city's park system.

"I've been mayor four times; I know what I'm doing," Greco said.  "I've never had anything turned down by city council because I work with people."

All candidates showed mutual respect for each other in the somewhat tame debate, but Greco's opponents all took various jabs at the 77-year-old political veteran.

"Mayor Iorio is the first mayor that has pushed rail transit and transit to the top of the agenda," said former county commissioner Ed Turanchik.  "And it's at the top of my agenda."

Former city councilman Bob Buckhorn said the city doesn't need to focus on the past; it needs to take another step forward.

And former county commissioner Rose Ferlita, considered by many to be one of Greco's toughest challengers, quizzed the former mayor on what immediate initiaves he would enact to help Tampa's youth.  Greco said, "it's all about the youth," but failed to offer any specific initiatives.
