Tampa, Florida - It is a scene that has shaken Tampa Police and neighbors to their core.

In the gated Ashington Reserve subdivision in New Tampa, police believe 50-year-old Julie Schenecker murdered her own teenage children. Dead are daughter Calyx, a 10th grade track and field star at King High School, and 13-year-old Beau, an eighth grader at Liberty Middle.

"She did tell us that they talked back, that they were mouthy," says Laura McElroy with TPD.  "But I don't think that will ever serve as an explanation to the rest of us of how you could take a child's life."

Police say shortly before 8 a.m. Friday, they got a call from Schenecker's mother in Texas, concerned that her daughter sounded depressed.

When officers arrived, they say Schenecker was in the back yard, covered with blood.  Beau was found shot to death in an SUV in the garage, and his sister Calyx, in an upstairs bedroom. Police believe they were killed Thursday.

"The mother was taken downtown [to Tampa Police headquarters]," McElroy says. "She described the crimes in detail to the detectives."

Neighbors -- some with children who attend the same schools -- were shocked. They say there was no indication that anything was wrong.

"I met the mother once. She seemed very nice and it's just... unconscionable," says neighbor Becky Ogburn.

Michelle Ball, another neighbor, says "It's really shaken me to the core. I just want to go get my kids at the moment, and hold onto them."

It took police several hours to publicly identify the family by name, because the father, Parker Schenecker, is a colonel with U.S. Army Intelligence and is currently stationed in Qatar.

Grief counselors have been dispatched to the children's schools and stress management counselors are here for the officers working the gruesome scene.

Shenecker was transported to the Orient Road Jail on two counts of first degree murder.
