Homosassa, Florida -- The search for a man who was diving for scallops in the Homosassa River has been suspended, the U.S. Coast Guard said Sunday night.

Vu Ngu, 37, of Riverview disappeared around noon Sunday from a 20-foot pontoon boat. Crew members said he was diving for scallops in about five feet of water for 10-15 minutes when he failed to surface.

Ngu was not wearing a lifejacket or fins, the Coast Guard said.

Rescuers searched for about 10 hours, covering an area of about 53 square miles. They called off the search around 9:30 p.m.

Taking part in the search were Coast Guard assets from Station Yankeetown, Air Station Clearwater, a Coast Guard auxiliary crew, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission units and dive teams from the Citrus County Sheriff's office, the Coast Guard said.

The FWC is the lead investigating agency.
