TAMPA, Florida (AP) -- Tampa police reportedly shot a robbery suspect, who had recently been released from prison.
Officers were searching a homeless camp Thursday after a Subway restaurant and a Bank of America were robbed that morning. During their search, officers met a probation officer looking for 45-year-old Steven Caponi, a registered sex offender whose GPS monitoring device had been deactivated.
Two officers and a canine eventually found Caponi in a wooded area. The officers asked Caponi to show them his hands and then shot him when he reportedly made a jerking motion toward his waist.
Caponi was taken by helicopter to a Tampa hospital. He was listed in serious but stable condition.
Witnesses later identified Caponi as the robber.
