UPDATE: Otter that attacked Venice man tests positive for rabies

Venice, Florida - Two men are recovering after being attacked by an otter in Venice.

It happened early Friday morning in the 300 block of Venice East Blvd. Two men were walking when an otter emerged from the brush. The otter knocked 96-year-old Morrell Denton to the ground and began attacking him.

His friend, Christopher Jansen and a witness, Raymond Duval, picked up some garden tools to fend off the animal, and then called 911.

Both Denton and Janssen were injured and went to the hospital for treatment. Duval was uninjured.

The otter tried to run back into the bushes, but was caught and put down, as it was considered dangerous to the public.  Officials tell us it was "vicious."

The otter will be tested for rabies. Results of the test usually takes a couple of days.
