St. Petersburg, Florida -- It's a new year and many of you are in need of a new job. That's what the U.S. Census Bureau is counting on. They're looking for thousands of Americans to help.

David Vessels has been unemployed for nearly a year, but there's one place he may be able to get hired right now - at the Census Bureau.

"Even if it's temporary, it doesn't matter. Money is money, as long as I have it coming in. It'll help me pay my bills for a little bit of time, even if it's a few months or a few weeks," said David Vessels.

The Census Bureau is looking to fill numerous positions around the Bay area for foot soldiers, people that go door to door collecting data for the bureau.

If you're planning to apply for one of these jobs, you must pass a thirty minute test that measures basic clerical, math, and reading skills. You'll also need current identification and you have to pass a background check.

In Hernando and Pasco Counties alone, officials are looking to fill a thousand jobs. St. Petersburg's Chamber of Commerce will be a contact point for some applicants.

"While this is not a full-time job or long term job, it gives folks the opportunity to bring some money in," said John Long, CEO of the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce.

The jobs pay between $8-14 an hour.

You can learn more about how to apply to work for the Census bureau by visiting their website: www.2010censusjobs.gov. There's an entire section devoted to 2010 census jobs. There are even a few short video clips about what it takes to be a census taker.
