Tierre Verde, Florida - The search for a missing St. Petersburg man continues Wednesday night.

Coast Guard boats, Marine Units and divers from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office and members of the Eckerd College Search and Rescue team are looking for a man who disappeared while swimming this afternoon off Ft. DeSoto Park in southern Pinellas County.

Pinellas County Sheriff's officials say three men were spending the day on North Beach on the side of Bunces Pass when one of the men, Kevin Persad, 29, of St. Petersburg went for a swim.

Much of the channel is shallow with sand bars but part of the channel drops to more than 16 feet deep and since the channel is narrow, deputies say, it has a swift current.

Deputies one of the friends, Michael Moyer, saw Persad about 250 feet offshore, in the water, calling for help.  Moyer ran back up the beach to call 911.  By the time, he came back, Persad had dissapeared beneath the water.  That was 3:45pm, exactly at low tide.

Within minutes, deputies say they were able to get to the exact location where Persad was last seen but they have not seen any sign of the missing swimmer.

Persad's family says he was a good swimmer.

Deputies say the men had been drinking on the beach but do not know if alcohol is a factor.
