St. Petersburg, Florida -- The Florida Highway Patrol says one person is dead and another is in serious condition after a car, driving the wrong way on Interstate 275, got into a head-on collision with another vehicle.

The crash happened shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday on southbound I-275, approaching the 22nd Avenue North exit in St. Petersburg. FHP says 26-year-old Constantine Chaconas of Palm Harbor was driving his 1991 Infiniti M30, when he struck the left-front end of a 2001 Toyota Solara being driven by 73-year-old Eugene Liddy of Sarasota.

Chaconas' car flipped upside down and eventually came to a rest on its roof.  Chaconas died at the scene.

Liddy was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he is listed in serious condition.

It's not clear at this time why Chaconas was driving the wrong way. Alcohol tests are pending.

Police kept the 22nd Avenue ramp shut down until about 2:30 Monday morning.
