The Baby Food Diet

PHILADELPIA, Pa. (KYW)-- It's a diet that Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston and Reece Witherspoon have reportedly been on. Lady Gaga, too. The celebrity slimming secret? Baby food.

It might be disgusting to some, but the Baby Food Diet can work.

"It definitely sounds gross, and it took some getting used to," said Becca Riccardi, who says the diet worked for her. She lost eight pounds in three weeks, before her wedding.

"The first week, my body definitely needed to adjust, but I felt good and I felt healthy, and I was happy with the results," said Becca.

On the Baby Food Diet, created by a trainer to the celebrities, you can eat 14 jars a day, any type, and one real meal.

Each jar of baby food contains about 80 calories. So that's a total of 1120 calories a day from mashed foods.

"It's simply reducing somebody's total caloric intake," said Dr. David Sarwer, with Penn's Center for Weight and Eating Disorders. He says it's a fad diet that he wouldn't recommend. "Eating small portion sizes throughout the day can be very helpful in people controlling their hunger."

The bottom line, all the nutritionists 9NEWS NOW spoke with say while this diet may help you drop a few quick pounds, drastically restrictive diets such as this one are not sustainable and can lead to yo-yo dieting. It's a temporary fix to what should be a lifestyle change.

A baby food diet will fall short in fiber, because most baby foods are pureed without the fibrous fruit and vegetable skins. The baby food portion of the diet will also be low in fat, which means any solid food you eat should contain some healthy fats such as the fats you find in nuts, avocado, olive oil and fish high in omega-3's.

Also, remember baby food tends to be pretty bland, so don't go overboard on salt to spice things up.

"I don't think baby food would be a good idea," said Elana Nola, of Bala Cynwyd.

It was so successful for Becca she did it again after her baby was born: "You see the pounds coming off of you. It keeps you motivated to keep doing it." She says she continues to eat baby food as a snack to help keep her weight down.
