Brooksville, Florida- Hernando County deputies are searching for whoever stole five dogs from the Humane Society.

They say this is the second time in the last five weeks animals have been taken from the facility.

The staff fears the dogs are being used for fighting.

"It's heartbreaking.  We're absolutely heartbroken," said executive director Joanne Schoch.

Whoever is stealing the dogs is selective.

Last month they stole a pitbull.

Sometime after closing on Wednesday, this time they took two daschunds and three pitbull mixes named Larry, Curly, and Moe.

"All that are the type of dog that might be used as bait for teaching a dog to become aggressive," Schoch said.

The staff, who believes several people may be involved, says they came in and out underneath the front gate, without ever unlocking it.

Deputies say it's possible the dogs were stolen for fighting, but it's too early to know for sure.

"This is very rare.  We don't get dogfighting cases.  In the seven years I've been here, I don't recall any," said Sgt. Donna Black.

Crimestoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

If you have any information call 1-866-990-TIPS.
