Sarasota, Florida - Sarasota Sheriff's detectives have arrested a 24-year-old man, charging him with child abuse for getting drunk and sleeping on top of his newborn son.
Investigators say Jonathon Ponder's 4-month-old son has permanent brain, liver and kidney damage.
Investigators say Ponder and the boy's mother were not honest about how the child was injured, delaying treatment that could have lessened the severity of his injuries. Detectives say the couple lied, because they didn't want to get into more trouble with child welfare investigators. The couple had reportedly been warned in the past about the dangers of sleeping with an infant, and had signed a form saying they would not sleep with the baby.

The couple have another child, a 6-year-old son. Ponder's arrest report states the older child told investigators he heard his mother yell at his father to "get off the baby, the baby can't breath." The child then showed detectives how the infant was gasping for air.
