Former Tarpon Springs police officer arrested for kidnapping

Pinelllas County, Florida -- A woman was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by a man impersonating a police officers. 

On July 26, around 2:30 a.m., a woman was walking on Gulf to Bay Blvd around Highlands Avenue. According to reports, a man, later identified as Larry Kobielnik, asked her if she need a ride at which point she got in Kobielnik's car. Kobielnik is a former Tarpon Springs Police Officer, but has not worked there in 10 years. 

Reportedly, after driving a few blocks the victim asked Kobielnik to stop and he refused. Kobielnik then showed the victim a handgun and a police badge, stating the victim was under arrest. He continued driving to a house in Dunedin where he then sexually battered the victim. 

The victim was held in the house for several hours until Kobielnik fell asleep and she was able to escape. Upon her leaving the house, the victim was able to get the vehicle's tag number, which she provided to detectives.

After the detective determined Larry Kobielnik was the suspect he was interviewed by detectives and denied the allegations. Kobielnik was arrested and transported to the Pinellas County Jail without further incident.

Kobielnik has been charged with kidnapping and sexual battery.
