Hernando County, Florida -- A pain clinic in Spring Hill was shut down and two others were cited for not meeting county ordinance requirements during a recent inspection.

On Jan. 29, Hernando County Vice and Narcotics Unit began inspections of all 11 registered pain clinics in the county to ensure they are complying with the County Pain Clinic Ordinance.

Out of the 11, the three clinics that failed the inspection were:

  • Cosmopolitan Clinic at 13111 Spring Hill Drive in Spring Hill
  • Florida Medical Pain Management at 5270 Applegate Drive in Spring Hill
  • Dr. Ahmed's General Practice Pain and Injury Clinic at 12080 Cortez Blvd. in Brooksville

Officials say the Cosmopolitan Clinic continued to operate even after their listed doctor Dr. Varel passed away. The clinic was also not placing a county license number on the prescriptions issued from the office. The clinic relinquished their county license and was shut down. The clinic will not be allowed to reopen until they obtain a new doctor and apply for a new county license.

D. Rivera, from Florida Medical Pain Management, was given a warning for not putting a county license number on prescriptions issued from the office. The report has been sent to Hernando County Code Enforcement for review.

Dr. Ahmed's General Practice Pain and Injury Clinic was found to be in violation of three sections of the county ordinance, according to sheriff's officials.

They included:

  • Not displaying the Pain Clinic Permit in the common area of the clinic
  • Accepting CASH ONLY for all services rendered, and
  • Not placing the county license number on prescriptions issued from the office

Dr. Ahmed was given a Notice to Appear for the first two misdemeanor violations. The third will be reviewed, along with the other two charges, by Hernando County Code Enforcement for possible revocation of the county license.

The sheriff's office says this isn't the first time Dr. Ahmed has been issued a violation for not placing the county license number on prescriptions.
