Tampa, FL-- A suspect has been identified almost one year after a woman was found stabbed to death in her bedroom, Hillsborough deputies announced Monday.
Back on February 12, 2012, a worried friend who hadn't heard from the murder victim, Nancy Grooms, then 52-years-old, went to check on her at her apartment on the 900 block of 122nd Ave. in Tampa. She found Grooms' body in her bedroom around 11:35 a.m.
Video surveillance footage taken previously from two local convenience stores showed Grooms in the clothing she wore at the time of her death and an unknown, black male.
Homicide detectives sent out requests for information on the man accompanying her in the videos, saying he may be helpful in their investigation, and he was later identified as 34-year-old Otano Leggett.
Witnesses told officials they saw Leggett leaving Grooms' apartment on the night of her death, and DNA evidence proved he was, in fact, with her prior to her murder, reports say.
On Friday, January 25, 2013, Homicide Detectives issued a warrant for Leggett's arrest, charging him with 1st Degree Murder with a Weapon.
Officials say he is currently in prison for unrelated Cocaine charges after an arrest this past August, though he will be brought back to Hillsborough County to face the murder charges.
