Lakeland, Florida -- A Polk County judge sentenced a former head football coach at George W. Jenkins High School -- who was arrested last year on charges of having sex with a 17-year-old female student -- to seven years in prison.
The sentence was the result of a plea agreement reached with 31-year-old Matt Thompson.
Investigators say Thompson had sex with the girl on at least two occasions at the his home, located on Glendale Street in Lakeland.
"We have a recorded conversation where coach Thompson admitted that he had sex with a child and in fact he had invited this child back over to his residence again and again," Sheriff Judd said at the time of Thompson's arrest.
"(Thompson) engaged (his victim) in sexual conduct and told her specifically he knew better. 'If you tell anyone I'll lose my job, I can't teach. If you tell anyone I'll go to jail,'" Judd added.
He was right.
Thompson had already been the subject of a Polk County School District investigation for allegedly harassing several of his former players at the time of his arrest last year.
