MULBERRY, Florida -- A man is under arrest after allegedly shooting an officer in the leg and causing a SWAT situation in Polk County.
The shooting happened at the corner of Willis and Highway 60, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Deputies were sent to the home of Douglas Meadows after receiving a call about an attempted suicide. When they arrived, they say Meadows fired at them with a rifle.
Meadows then reportedly barricaded himself inside his house and continued firing. The sheriff's office says one of the bullets ricocheted of the road and hit a deputy, Lt. Terry Storie, in the leg.
Authorities say a SWAT team was called out. They used a robot to get a closer look at the home, but say Meadows shot it 3-4 times. The SWAT team then used a chemical agent that caused the suspect to leave the house. He was apprehended and charged with attempted murder on a law enforcement officer.
Lt. Storie suffered non life-threatening injuries.
"Today could have been a tragic day for the PCSO and the community of Mulberry," says Sheriff Grady Judd. "Douglas E. Meadows was on a mission to kill deputies today, but he did not succeed. With the great work of our deputies, SWAT members, and the partnership with the State Fire Marshal, Lt. Storie, a dedicated member of our PCSO family, is still with us."
