Lake Wales, Florida - Lake Wales Police are looking for a 33-year-old man who poured gas on his mother and tried to set her on fire.
On Tuesday, Officers say Matthew Paul Kelly asked his mother for a ride, because his car ran out of gas. With the gasoline in the car, the two started driving to his vehicle. That's when the mother says her son started acting agitated to the point of becoming enraged.
Kelly's mother decided to drive him to Lake Wales Hospital instead. Officers say when he realized where he was going, he began pulling at the steering wheel. Kelly's mother pulled over and the two got out of the car. His mother tried to reason with him, saying he needed medical help.
That's when police say he grabbed the small gas can from the floorboard and began splashing his mother with it. Police say he told his mother, "I don't care. I'm going to jail anyway. I'll kill us both." They say he then reached into his pants pocket.
Matthew is a smoker and his mother feared he was trying to retrieve a lighter to follow through with his threat. She was able to drive away.
By the time officers responded to his mother's call for help, Kelly had left the area.
He should be driving a 2005 Buick Rainier silver in color bearing Florida tag AFV Q37.
