Sarasota, Florida -- A female officer patrolling the area of St. Armands Circle and Lido Key was responsible for apprehending a career criminal who tried to rob a nearby restaurant.

Sarasota Police say Officer Donzia Franklin was alerted to a burglary attempt at La Malinche Mexican Restaurant on S. Blvd. of Presidents around 4 a.m. Thursday.

When she responded to the restaurant, the owner told her when he heard something moving in the back of the restaurant he was confronted by a man who shoved him and swung at him before fleeing.

Officer Franklin had just seen resident Jeffrey Todaro walking quickly west on John Ringling Boulevard and doubled back on her bicycle to get to him. When she brought Todaro back to the restaurant he was identified as the suspect.

Todaro, 44, has a lengthy criminal history with 18 arrests including 14 felony and 13 misdemeanor charges. This will be his third burglary arrest.

The sheriff's office says Officer Franklin has years of dedicated service in the community and her department awards include Officer of the Year, two Meritorious Service Medals and two Lifesaving Medals. In 2011, she was also presented with the Community Service Award by the Lido Shores Homeowners Association for 17 years of patrolling the area.
